EYFS

Overview of F1 curriculum- Our Journey

Our curriculum has been planned with all the FS1 staff and curriculum leads. We have designed a curriculum that gives our children real life hands-on experiences with visits and visitors and using books that are rich in vocabulary and language.

We start our journey with the topic All About Me. We find out all about ourselves and what we like and dislike in terms of food, toys and TV shows. We discuss how we look the same or different to each other. We begin to find out about our local area Shirecliffe by carrying out an Autumn walk around the outside of our school grounds and walking down to Tesco in small groups to do shopping for nursery.

In Autumn 2 we focus on familiar and unfamiliar fairy tales. We introduce the ideas that stories have characters and settings and we discuss what we like or dislike about the story. We visit Sundown Adventureland to look around Storybook village and see characters from the stories that we have been reading. We transition onto Christmas by reading ‘The Jolly Christmas Postman’ which has familiar characters from the stories that we have read. We learn all about Christmas and join in the nativity as the choir.

In Spring 1 we become explorers and find out all about dinosaurs and how they once existed but are now extinct. We learn the job of a palaeontologist and explore how to excavate dinosaur bones. We then find out about animals that exist today in warmer climates in the country of Africa. We get the opportunity to be close to some small animals from warmer climates during a Sam’s Safari workshop visit to nursery.

In Spring 2 we find out about animals that live on a farm in England and animals that live in extremely cold countries comparing what those countries look like compared to England and decide if the weather is the same or if the animals that live in England could live in the Arctic or Antarctica. We will visit Cannon Hall Farm to get close to the animals we have been learning about and will have a farm tour by a Farmer who will tell us interesting facts.

In Summer 1 we focus on growing and changing. We explore how to grow plants and go on a Spring walk around the outside of the school grounds to compare what they looked like in Autumn, Winter and now in Spring. We find out about minibeasts and explore the lifecycle of a caterpillar in nursery by observing the changes that happen to them over a few weeks.

In Summer 2 we look at the children’s past experiences of holidays and share new knowledge about different holiday destinations and activities to do on holiday. We learn that there are different countries and climates in the world adding onto previous knowledge covered in other terms. We visit Cleethorpes and get to explore the coastal area.

Throughout the year, we celebrate different faith and cultural festivals such as Eid and Diwali which are celebrated by our children. The children share their experiences of these celebrations and we compare them to other celebrations such as Christmas looking at what is the same or different. We also allow children to follow their own interests as well as our curriculum during their continuous provision play.
