Implementation of Music

We are using Charanga to deliver regular and discrete music lessons, following the Model Music Curriculum v2. This exposes the children to a wide range of musical artists and composers, in addition to listening to different genres and eras of music. We encourage children to be confident performers when singing or using percussion or tuned instruments. Lessons are structured in a way that gives familiarity to the pupils so they can develop their skills confidently.

The areas taught are:

  • Singing
  • Listening
  • Musical vocabulary
  • Composing and improvisation
  • Reading and writing music
  • Performing

Across Y3 and Y4, musicality is developed with the Sheffield Music Hub, with children progressing in woodwind instruments from recorders to clarinet. Children in Y5 and Y6 have the opportunity to continue on this pathway, and further develop their skills.

We provide additional musical opportunities across school, predominantly in singing and performing. We put on Christmas performances of singing and the nativity to our families and community. We hold an annual talent show and put on a Y5/6 production every year. We take a group of children to Young Voices each year, after they have used an extra-curricular club to learn the content.
