Implementation of History

Our history curriculum is national curriculum compliant, whilst all of our units are planned specifically with our own children in mind. We try to reflect our local history within our context, where possible, and teach our children about key individuals, places and ways of life. We develop the children’s abilities to use sources and evidence and what they can tell us about the past. We use storytelling, music, hands-on-activities and sharing of videos and photographs, as well as replica artefacts. Visits and visitors, and the experiences that these offer, are a major part of the history curriculum. Each unit aims to be progressive and repetitive to build crucial knowledge and skills, as well as using repetition to enable children to remember more and know more.

The majority of the curriculum is taught chronologically, but the main focus is building on the key concepts. These key concepts are:

  • power
  • civilisation
  • invasion
  • settlement
  • trade
