MFL
Implementation of Modern Foreign Languages
We teach MFL in key stage 2, and the language we have chosen to teach is Spanish. We chose Spanish as the local secondary schools have a focus on the language and many of our children who go on holiday visit Spanish-speaking countries, and we wanted to provide our children with a basic understanding of the vocabulary, building up to whole sentences and summarising texts.
Each year group’s topics build across the key stage and consolidates previous knowledge to ensure vocabulary is sound. Throughout the lessons children listen to songs, use flash cards, have conversations, translate existing familiar texts, such as Dear Zoo and Hungry Caterpillar. We aim for the children to enjoy learning a new language in an engaging manner.
